At the mention of trouble Mordant fumbled with his shroud.
"Not supoosed to meet people aloone yet," He glanced back at the forest. "I am still new heree."
He looked back at Evelyn in curiosity.
"You allowed outside aloone? You are small friend. Iss not dangerouss?"

Evelyn shifted her stance into a more comfortable one.
She nodded to show her understanding. She remembered when she used to follow that command. Yet, since its been two years since she'd joined, it's a bit more leisurely. But at the moment, she was still breaking some rules that were set for her.
"Well, about that," She began with a nervous laugh, "I really shouldn't be out here either. I'm further out than I'm allowed to go, and as you can see, I'm very... small. My abilities aren't extremely offensive, they're more defensive, I guess. I'm taking a few risks to see all this!" She concluded, making large gesticulations to the surrounding forest.

Mordant looked around at the forest and nodded as well.
"I haave different problem." He looked back towards the town and gestured at it. "I not allowed there to seee thaat." He pointed at himself. "Too biig. Leader say too dangerouss."
He pat the grass comfortingly.
"I still haave foorest. They take mee heree some time. Neveer see otherss."

Evelyn felt herself frown slightly. So he wasn't allowed to go into town? That sounded rather dismal- not to mention it reminded her of a story she had read a few weeks ago. A children's fairy tale- Something about a malformed person who lived in a bell tower and they were not to see anyone.
She then sat down across from him, her legs neatly tucked underneath her, "That's true." She hesitated, "Have you ever wanted to see the town?" It might not be the best thing that she could do, but she truly wondered if Mordant wanted to see what the civilization had to offer. It was indeed night, and not a lot of humans were around at this time. So perhaps it would be safe to show him around?

Mordant balked at the suggestion. He never disobeyed his superiors before, but that was before he meet Evelyn. Meeting her was already breaking the rules and he was doing ok, right? His internal conflict showed as he fumbled with his clothes.
"Ah, maybee? I want to seee, but iss maybee not good idea? Eviee will bee in trouble. I am too biig... too dangerouss."
Even as he said the words he saw the lights flicker on in town and his single eye widened at the spectacle. He shouldn't. He really shouldn't, but he was helplessly curious.
"... Maybee if careful. Just a peeek?"

It was odd of her to willingly break rules like this, but something within her was helplessly wanting to give Mordant a bit of freedom. Was it sympathy? It was most likely empathy as she'd felt the same way many times before.
Biting her lip, she watched the other struggle with making a choice. Evelyn didn't blame his indecisiveness as she would probably react in a similar fashion if she was given the choice.
Once he agreed, her grin mimicked that of a crescent moon as she stood up quickly, her cloak billowing in the breeze which flew through the tall pine trees, "Don't you worry! We'll be very careful and it won't be for that long! I can show you my bakery," She paused, "And if we get close to being caught, I have a doorway to the catacombs in the basement of my shop! It'll make for an easy escape."

Between his nerves and his excitement, Mordant fiddled his fingers as he followed behind Evelyn, both of them utterly quiet on their journey to the edge of the town. Evelyn stepped into a pool of light under a street lamp and Mordant hung back, looking left and right at the new constructs and clinging to the shadows for comfort.
"Iss saafe?" came his gravelly whisper. "No oone see mee?"
He saw a shiny object on the ground and gingerly picked it up. It was metallic and cylindrical, but surprisingly light. His first souvenir of the town. There was some liquid in it, but he shook it out before palming the strange object.
"Eviee, where gooing?"
He asked as she motioned for him to follow around the corner.

Evelyn stood in the bland yet warm light of the street lamp for a moment, looking around in silence. Not a single soul was roaming the streets. It so far seemed that only they were there. She turned to gaze at Mordant, nodding, "No one." Came her whispered reply.
Walking forward a few paces, motioning for him to follow, Evelyn Leigh then delved into a back alley, "We're going to take a short cut to the bakery. It's a bit out of the way, but easy to traverse through quickly." The girl explained, "It's completely safe, so don't worry!" She reassured, looking back to make sure that he was following.
She constantly was glancing over at him to make sure he was in some sort of calm. What she didn't want was him to be extremely high-strung and uncomfortable.

Mordant kept stopping to inspect things and began to collect odds and ends he found on the way. By the time they were behind Evelyn's Bakery he had a handful of soda cans, bottle caps, a plastic fork, and a few stray coins. All of these were interesting trinkets and he held them carefully as he waited for Evelyn to tell him where to go next.
Evelyn looked at him curiously as he held his hoard and Mordant held them out for her inspection.
"Iss sou-ven-ir." He whispered cautiously. His single eye was arched in a smile as he thought of where to put his curiosities when he returned to the catacombs.

She found his collection to be very... interesting, to say the least. To her, those were everyday items, but to him, well she figured they were much more. So of course, Evelyn wouldn't spoil the fun for him.
Smiling in return, she led him through the small, enclosed garden behind the bakery, a fountain babbling in the center, "Those are some very very nice souvenir's you've got there!" She complimented before opening the back door for him.
"Well anyways, here we are! Welcome to the Cornerstone Bakery!"

Mordant's single eye widened as he glanced around the building. Everything smelled different, white powder in the air, something sweet, and fruits being preserved.
"Ooh!"
He nearly dropped his collecting in amazement. He ducked his large frame into the building and hunched over as he inspected everything. He touched a large bowl with a single claw finger and it made a delightful ringing sound. He placed his hand over an oven and felt the residual warmth. He tenderly touched the flour on the counter and rubbed it between his fingers.
This was a new world.
"Ahhh! Hmm! Ooh!"
Small exclamations of interest escaped him and he looked at the various baked goods lining the shelves and the random ingredients left about. His dark robe caught all the flour her stirred up and left patches of white on the cloth, but Mordant didn't mind.
"What iss, Eviee?" He asked pointed at the baked goods behind the glass display.

Evelyn made sure to close the door behind him, glancing around the hidden courtyard just to be sure before following after him into the familiar surroundings.
She put a hand to her lips to cover her bubbly grin, though she couldn't help but think about how absolutely adorable Mordant was acting. So curious and full of life- it spurred her heart! She leaned against the wall, onlooking the scene which was playing before her.
Walking over to stand next to him,Evelyn leaned down for a moment to stare at all of the sweets and other various food items which still were placed there, "These are the things that we sell to customers! They buy them and then they eat them!" She explained, "We have all sorts of goodies- donuts, cakes, breads... A lot of things!" Sauntering behind the counter, she smiled brightly.
"So, I can give you something if you want! Totally free of charge!"

They eat them? Mordant thought as he looked at the decorative confections. They were nothing like the things he would eat, they looked far too nice to eat. At the thought of eating he stiffened and put a hand over his stomach. Oh no he wouldn't! He was not going to eat here, in this new world, with his new friend! He backed away from the counter and shook his head, playing off his reserved actions with a light laugh.
"Haaa! Iss ok. Too pretty foor feeding." He said as he adjusted his hold on his trinkets. "Too pretty to give foor freee."
This was such a fun day and he didn't want to ruin it by scaring his new friend.

Pursed her lips before chuckling, "You sure? I'm not going to force you to have any, but I wouldn't mind at all!" Evelyn chirped, leaning on the counter.
"But anyways, I should finish giving you the tour! This is just the downstairs area. Time for upstairs!" She cheered, waltzing towards the door in the corner of the large room, opening it to reveal a flight of stairs, "Watch your head while you're going up, it's a bit narrow."
With that, the candle demon lead Mordant up the stairs and to a hallway, one door to the left, and three doors to the right, "We can skip the kitchen, my room and bathroom- I'll show you the living room!" Clasping her hands together, she practically skipped to the end, opening double doors to reveal the biggest room on the upper floor besides her own bedroom. In the corner was a grand piano by large windows over looking the courtyard in the back, heavy drapes adorning them. Of course, there was a couch and a recliner as well as a television above the fire place. Everything about the dimly lit room screamed 'cozy'.

Mordant was once again swept away. He stared at everything and walked over to the window. He tapped the glass and examined the streets down below. Amazing. He understood windows, but he was nonetheless fascinated. He touched the soft drapes then moved on, touching the piano in unfettered curiosity, and then the black box of the tv. Once done he sat on the couch, his knees indicating just how uncomfortably tall he was for the furniture.
He smiled again at Evelyn and nodded.
"Iss nice."
A single statement to express being both overwhelmed and completely content at the same time. He wiggled his knees slightly as he continued looking around the room at all the mysterious objects.
"Eviee iss very different thaan mee." He smiled again. "Iss good."
