Spider A light breeze blew inside the cabin from an open window as Chance started unpacking the shopping bags she’d just brought in. It was one of the first warm and sunny days of the year, and she’d put it to good use, spending most of the morning cleaning up around the cabin and baking a few batches of cookies before walking down to Eventide for groceries. After she stored the last of the food in the fridge, she let out a content sigh and leaned against one of the kitchen counters, stretching her arm out to pluck a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie off the cooling rack she’d left them on. She touched the metal of the rack, and felt her way across it to scoop up a cookie, but didn't find one. Confused, Chance went over the rack again with her hand, but still couldn't find a cookie. Did I put them away before I left and forget? she wondered, walking over to the cookie jar in the corner to check.

Aren had been drifting from shadow to shadow over the day, silently grumbling about the fact that he was bored, or at least whatever seemed similar. Stopping to think about it wasn't going to make his day any better. The sudden unmistakeable scent of what he found to be cookies were a welcome change, seemingly unmonitored even.
It had been slightly too late when he finally noticed that the cookies were in fact someones property, feeling a sting of regret as he stared down at the figure below who seemed to be searching for the sweets he just confiscated. He silently counted the cookies he still had, tucking one more between his teeth out of habit before slowly lowering himself over the counter from the ceiling shadow he had been hiding in and putting down the cookies on the counter, remaining suspended upside down. The least he could do is apologize. "Excuse me."

Chance was startled when she heard something being dropped onto the counter behind her, but that didn’t even begin to describe her momentary terror when she heard a voice behind her too. She jumped at least a foot in the air out of shock, twisting around to where the voice had come from before she lost her balance and almost toppled to the ground, saved only by her deathly tight grip on one of the counters. No one had ever accused her of being graceful.
“Y-yes?” She said to whoever had spoken as she straightened up, her voice too high pitched and tight to sound anything less than terrified.

"H-Hello, um... My bad I scared you." Aren quietly continued, fully stepping out of his patch of shadow and onto the kitchen floor. He dusted off himself before glancing over the other, grinning awkwardly. "Are you alright?" He awkwardly folded his hands together, slightly shifting around as he faced the other.

“I-I’m fine,” Chance managed to stutter out, before she sucked in a deep breath to calm her nerves and relaxed her death grip on the counter. “Just please don’t ever sneak up on me like that again.” She took another deep breath before asking, “Um, how did you did you get into my home? And who are you?”

"It happens." Aren started, gesturing to the ceiling slightly. "I can't exactly help but sneak, for some reason I tend to remain soundless even if I don't mean to." he diverted his gaze from Chance to the ceiling, proceeding to point. "As for how I came in, via the shadows." he made a small wave, the shadows on the ceiling rippling as he did. "And for the final explanation... I'm Araneus, but I prefer Aren." He hummed, stepping over and reaching out for a handshake.

Chance perked up when she heard Aren’s name, remembering it being mentioned a couple times when she visited the cult mansion. So he’s a cult member, she thought to herself, relaxing at the news and even letting herself smile a bit. “My name’s Chance,” she told him, raising her hand for a handshake and taking his already outstretched hand. Another question popped into her head, and she asked “Why are you in here? My kitchen, I mean.”

Aren mustered a gentle smile, hoping he didn't seem all too odd. "It's nice to meet you." He awkwardly folded his hands behind his back with a small laugh, before guiltily pointing to the cookies he just had returned on the counter. "I... I might have taken some of the cookies you were baking earlier, they were delicious but that's besides the question and I'd like to apologize." He mumbled.

Chance paused at Aren’s reply. In her brief panic brought about when he dropped into her kitchen, she’d almost forgotten about the cookies she’d been looking for. She knew she should be more upset about the attempted theft, but Aren had brought the cookies back, and his apology did sound sincere, so she was willing to let the incident slide.
She gave Aren a small shrug. “It’s ok,” she told him. “Honestly, I’m more impressed that you managed to keep a hold of all of them at once. I left at least three batches worth of cookies on the rack.” She jokingly added, “Or did you just eat so many there were barely any left?”

An embarrassed laugh escaped Aren as he thought about the comment, a blush starting to form on his face. "Well, I did, but as for carrying them off?" with a small sigh two more sets of arms appeared out of his torso, holding them out as if showing off before they retreated again. "I might... have eaten more than I should yes, but I can't exactly feel if it's too much since it just sort of... evaporates I reckon." he continued, underscoring his story with a few awkward hand motions and an even more awkward grin. He was perhaps not being a paragon of politeness or common sense right now, or so Jung told him.

Chance listened to Aren, but became confused when he didn’t answer her question about carrying the cookies off, despite repeating the question himself. It occurred to her that he may have just tried to show her instead. She waited until he finished speaking before asking, “I’m sorry, but can you be a bit more verbal with your first answer? I didn’t mention it before, but I’m blind, and I couldn’t see what you were doing.”

Aren awkwardly fumbled with his cloak, listening to the question and swallowing harshly, feeling a sinking feeling in his stomach. "O-Oh, gosh, I am so sorry, I didn't think of that." he stopped fumbling for once, simply holding on to his cloak with shaky hands. "I actually can have more than just two arms... And yes, I ate a lot of them so that definitely makes it easier to carry." He let out another awkward laugh, glancing off to the side from time to time. "I hope you'll forgive me for my mistake, I sometimes forget to think about things like that. And um... I am not very good at explaining things verbally when I'm a tad nervous."

Chance could hear Aren’s nervousness in his voice as he spoke and immediately regretted bringing her blindness up, worried that she’d sounded too curt when she’d told him about it. “No, no, please don’t feel bad, you didn’t do anything wrong. I-I should have mentioned it earlier anyway, but I just try not to make a big deal out of it when I can.” As Chance spoke, she could feel her face growing hotter from shame. All she’d managed to do was make Aren feel guilty about something that wasn’t his fault.

Aren awkwardly tapped on the counter, wondering what he could do. He didn't mean to make the other feel bad too, and apologizing any more didn't seem like the best reply. "... The least I can do is be mindful of it, I should definitely not be making assumptions." He said, a small laugh following and feeling his nerves start to calm down a bit. "Uh... Don't feel bad, I can keep it in mind now and it was more clear than curt." He mused on the latter word of that was a proper word to use, before shaking his head.

As she listened to Aren speak, Chance's nerves started to settle down again, relieved that she hadn't made him feel too bad about not realizing she was blind. Not wanting to linger on their awkward topic of conversation anymore, Chance searched for something more to say before her thoughts were interrupted by her own growling stomach. Letting out a nervous giggle as she plucked a cookie from the pile, Chance asked Aren, "Would you like something to drink?" before she turned to take her battered tea kettle out from one of the cabinets.
