The Stellar Core
It was an extremely early dawn on the wet rock known as Earth that sped through outer space around a blazing ball of plasma known as Sol.
Law was sitting atop a grassy knoll, focusing his inner energy and meditating cross-legged under a strong oak tree. He looked up calmly, gazing into the night sky and exhaling slowly. The great empty expanse above him was not so empty that night, with a large meteor shower immediately above the green hill. Dozens of shimmering dots of light blazed through the outer atmosphere, burning up and emitting large amounts of shimmering brightness. The light pollution from Eventide didn't affect this area, with it being so far away from the mostly human inhabited town. Law let his gaze wander over the shimmering dots of light in the sky, noting the positions of the stars and inwardly smiling, noticing the constellation of Scorpius, reminding him of his good friend. He didn't know it, but his peaceful feelings wouldn't last long.
Scorpius Antares. Eighth king of the kingdom of Skorü. Soon-to-be recipient of the blessings of the stars.
Scorpius walked up the knoll, his hand gloved and in his pocket, attempting to ward off the cold that permeated the air and hung around him like a foul aura. His pincer drooped at his side, the usually distinguishable blue of his tail and pincer muddled by the darkness and Scorpius' own foul mood. He trudged up the hill, sighing as he reached the small summit.
He hadn't expected to find anyone there, let alone his long time friend, Law.
"Hey there Law. Didn't know you'd be up here! How're the meteors?" Scorpius walked up and cocked his head to the side before dropping to a sitting position next to the masked Egyptian.
"Nothing special. Once you've lived over a century traveling the world you lose your touch with the vast emptiness of space." Law huffed before leaning against the oak tree.
Plotting a course down to Earth was not easy, but the glowing mass of light and energy had its target in its sights.
Law looked to the side as Scorpius closed his eyes and relaxed next to him, nestling down into the soft grass. He noticed a curious dot of light among the myriad others, a speck of glimmering shine that grew larger and brighter the longer he looked at it. It wasn't fizzling out like the rest of the meteors, but instead looked to be growing in size, or getting closer. Law heard a faint rumbling sound, and glanced down at his friend before staring back at the orb of light that he could see now was getting closer, and fast.
"Scorpius...? I think a meteor is coming to kill us?" Law stood, staring straight at the approaching luminous mass.
"Don't be ridiculous, Law. I'm trying to get some rest here!" The scorpion king yawned, stretching slightly and laying down on the ground.
Law was about to bring up the rumbling noise, but that rumbling was now deafeningly loud, and Law gazed up in wonder and amazement.
There was a star about the size of a large car barreling down upon him and Scorpius.
He swiftly grabbed Scorpius' collar and threw him out of harms way just as the star crashed down onto the hill, blasting the oak tree apart and engulfing Law whole before slamming into the summit and sending a shockwave outwards that snapped nearby trees in half and threw Scorpius backward halfway down the hill.
Wrong target. Too late.
Scorpius was immediately knocked out before quickly regaining his composure. He looked up, shielding his eyes from an unbelievably bright light emanating from the top of the hill. "L-Law?! Are you okay?!"
He sprinted up the hill, igniting his pincer and taking a step back when he was encountered by a large luminous orb that sat right in the center of the hill, pulsing and causing bits of bark and wood from the splintered oak to smoke and catch fire.
Scorpius ran up to the fledgling star, his pincer blazing with a fierce flame, before bringing down all his might on the sphere. It rebounded off, a jarring sensation shooting up his spine from his pincer. He dropped to all fours, adopting a feral pose and ignited his tail flame, engulfing the star in a cone of torrential fire, to no avail. He swung again and again at the stellar mass, his attacks merely bouncing off and not even scratching the transparent material that had immediately grown around the star itself.
He continued for 2 hours, until the sun started rising. He knew his friend was in there, and that Law had likely risked his life for him.
Withdrawing, Scorpius snarled and a pillar of flame erupted from the ground where he stood, engulfing him completely before pulling back to reveal a horrifying yet simultaneously beautifully crafted creature of chitinous plates and flesh. It was a scorpion-man. The top half being Scorpius, but with more muscle mass, and his lower half being the body of a scorpion, complete with pincers. He opened his chitinous maw and screeched at the star, throwing balls of fire at it from his hands and swiping at it with his pincers, with no effect on the sphere. Eventually, he grabbed a fallen tree and speared it into the star, the tree immediately splintering into a million pieces.
For another half hour, Scorpius remained in his hyper mode, angrily slashing at the star and bathing it in his own flames. Nothing worked. Eventually, he calmed down and left his hyper mode, transforming back to his usual form.
"Law... I'm so sorry."
He grabbed his phone from the ground, ignoring the shattered screen, and dialed Nylios.
Inside the star, a different story altogether was unfolding.
As soon as Law was engulfed by the star, he blacked out. When he came to, he was floating around, suspended in a swirling and bright place. The surroundings had shifting colors and strange patterns that ebbed and flowed in and out of existence.
You are not Scorpius.
A voice, unlike anything Law had ever heard before echoed around him, enveloping him in it's myriad light tones.
Law started at the voice, looking around for the source of the almost child-like voice. "W-Who are you?! Where am I?"
So rude. I represent Proxima Centauri. You may call me Prox. You are currently inside me, but the more important question is why is it you, and not Scorpius, who is inside me?
"What are you talking about?! What even are you?"
You're asking too many questions, and I'm tired from my trip to your ugly little planet. I will rest now. Goodbye.
"Wait!!" Before he could stop it, the voice disappeared, and the surroundings grew a shade darker.
Law floated there, completely alone, thinking hard about his situation. He knew he had been hit by the star, but didn't know what had happened after. He lay adrift in the endless void, trying to move forward, but with nothing to give him a sense of stability, he ended up making himself feel sick. The Egyptian let his head droop down. He was suddenly very tired, and he drifted off to an uneasy rest.
After an indeterminately long amount of time, he awoke once more. The surroundings were back to their original brightness, and Law figured that meant that Prox was back.
Oh. You're awake.
Law looked around again, trying to focus on where the sound came from, but couldn't pinpoint any location at all.
I'm very disappointed with what you've given me to work with here. You are not at all what I was planning on working on, and I had to scrap all my original plans for Scorpius since you and him are so different.
Law scowled, noting the tones of the endless abyss he floated in. "Stop hiding and come out here! Let me see you!"
Law turned around, looking and waiting for something, anything to break the unending bright myriad of colors.
A sphere of light appeared in front of him, coalescing into the form of what looked like a 13 year old, although it was so bright he could barely tell.
Hello there.
"H-Hi...? I'm sorry, but I just don't believe what's going on right now. How are you a-" Law was cut off mid sentence by Prox, who immediately walked toward him.
I am a star. You know that much already. I came from far away to give Scorpius my power, now I can't do that and I'll have to give my power to you. And I've been working on a new set of clothes for you. Your current ones are too shabby and bleak.
Law leaned away from Prox, crossing his arms and trying to walk away, but he couldn't get anywhere while floating around in nothing. Frustrated, he pulled out his gun, aiming it at Prox and firing a barrage of lasers that sped toward the young star child.
Oh come on.
Instantly, the lasers stopped in midair, frozen in place by small bubbles of light that surrounded them. Prox moved their hand, and the lasers dissipated, before raising both hands toward Law and clenching them into fists, causing small portals to open around Law, and long ribbons to fly out of them, binding Law in place and removing his guns.
You're gonna sit still for a bit. I can't have you running around freely in here. Just leave this to me, you'll thank me later.
Law scowled under his veil before relaxing his muscles and letting the ribbons hold him up. They were suspiciously strong for pieces of fabric and Law didn't want to anger Prox as of yet.
---4 days later---
"Nylios...? I brought you some food..." Scorpius walked up the hill, carrying a plastic bag of some stuff he brought from his nearby house. Nylios was sitting on the ground, staring straight at the star, unblinking. Scorpius sighed and walked up, putting the bag down next to all the other bags of uneaten food before sitting down beside Nylios and joining him in staring at the bright orb of light.
"Do you think he'll come out?"
Scorpius flinched when Nylios asked this. It was a difficult question. Over the past 4 days, the star had grown dimmer and dimmer, now it was about a third as dark as it was when it first appeared. The star had done nothing in that time, and although they didn't say it, both Nylios and Scorpius were beginning to lose hope that their friend would return to them.
"How about this? We wait for one more day and if he doesn't come out we'll try something else, okay?"
Nylios looked down at the torn up ground and nodded slowly, looking back at Scorpius, tears forming in his eyes.
"Just let me out of here! Why do you care so much about this anyway?"
Prox was sitting at a workbench made of starfire, glancing back to Law occasionally as they tinkered with small pieces of metal. They chose not to reply, focusing on forging the outfit that the tall Egyptian would soon wear.
"How long will you take? My friends are probably really worried about me. Can't you just let me go? I'll come back when you're done and then we can continue from there!"
Prox slammed their hands on the workbench before standing up and swiftly walking toward Law, glaring up at him.
Okay first of all, I care because you're supposed to be my new host. I don't know how long this will take, and I can't let you go because I have no guarantee that you'll be back and besides, I need you here for measurements.
Prox returned to their workbench, picking up a sharp piece of what looked like gold before disappearing completely in a bright flash.
Great. Prox was gone again.
Law noticed that the ribbons had gotten a little loose, and he tugged on them to test their strength. It seemed like he could easily break out of them if he really tried, so he tensed up and moved his arms with swift movements, but the ribbons refused to let him go, they simply pulled him back to their starting point.
With another bright flash of light, Prox reappeared, a smug look on his face.
I think you'll like my new clothing designs!
The young star snapped his fingers, and all of Law's clothes dissipated immediately, leaving him completely nude.
"Woah woah woah! Hey what're you doing?!" Law struggled more, his face now exposed, which was a rare sight.
Prox snapped again, and Law saw new clothes appearing on his body, fabric that looked like Prox had taken space itself and woven it into cloth, gold armor that shimmered and glowed brilliantly in the bright surroundings and comfortable bandages that covered his feet.
"W-What...? What is all this?"
Prox remained silent, and snapped their fingers again, looking away as Law started shaking and screaming, a searing pain piercing his back. He shouted and begged for the pain to stop, but Prox ignored his calls and cries, simply watching as ribbons of starlight erupted from Law's back, three on the left and three on the right, six in total. The pain died down, and Law breathed in and out heavily as the ribbons that had held him up for days finally released him. Prox snapped once more and a disc of light appeared below Law, catching him and letting Law walk around in that small area.
"W-What did you do to me?! What are these?!" Law pointed at his back ribbons with one hand while covering his face with another.
I gave you a weapon more elegant than those silly guns of yours. You should be thanking me. Now, we're almost done here. I need some time to gather my energy, but for now you should be able to control this space to your whim. Now come to me and take a knee.
Law reluctantly walked to Prox and knelt on one knee, now at a level height with the star child. Prox snapped again, and a golden crown with an empty gem hole in it appeared in their hands. Prox gently placed the crown onto Law's head, and the Egyptian felt a surge of energy rush through him before he fell over from the crushing pain in his head. The crown was merging with his skull.
I'll be back in one of your Earth-hours. Endure the pain until then.
Prox disappeared again, but Law barely processed it. He was writhing on the floor, screaming and shaking furiously in pain as the hardened and tempered metal fused into his head.
An hour later, the pain had died down to a dull throb but Law was still lying on the light disc, his eyes clenched shut. Prox reappeared in a flash, and they were now almost twice as bright as they were before.
Time for you to get what you wanted so much. I'm releasing you from here, but be warned, your body has grown accustomed to the conditions in here, and when it returns back to your world, it might immediately collapse from the immense pressure and sensory overload. I'll do my best to keep that from happening, but once I merge with the crown I'll have lost about half the power I've saved up. Good luck.
A bright flash of light blasted from Prox, and the star child turned into a small, bright ball of light that sped towards Law's crown, fusing itself into the empty gem slot and growing considerably dimmer. Law stood up, looking around as his surroundings started to go completely black and fall apart.
"Nylios? Somethings up with the star."
Scorpius stood up from his portable chair and walked to the orb, examining it meticulously. It was becoming black. Nylios soon joined him, watching as the star became a sphere of pitch darkness.
"Is something wrong with it? What do you think it's gonna-"
With a shockwave of light and stardust, the star exploded, knocking Scorpius and Nylios back a good distance. When they had climbed back up the hill, they were presented with something they had not expected in their whole lives.
Law floated above where the star had been, majestic and utterly radiant. Ribbons flowed from his back, blown slightly by a stiff breeze that had picked up. His golden armor glittered in the sunlight, and his face was more or less exposed, with only two bandages covering his eyes. The crown adorned on his head held his cult flame, and he slowly descended to the ground, shaky and unsure of his first steps on solid ground in a week.
"L-Law?"
Both Scorpius and Nylios simultaneously ran toward the former Egyptian, hugging him tightly. "Welcome back... we waited for you. I knew you'd come back to us!"
"Hey guys... Sorry I took so long."
A voice reverberated in his mind, the voice of Prox.
You are now a celestial warrior. Bear the title well. I need to rest for a bit.
