“What a mess…”
Bone sighed at the current state of her room. It was packed with overgrowth, fallen tiles, and other pieces of debris. She groaned, regretting getting so many plants from the forest. Then again it wasn't like she ever expected this to happen. She started hacking at the vines filling her room, once or twice her eye started hurting and her vision got blurry.
“Huh…” She squinted, and found that it looked clearly when she did. “So I need my monocle lens replaced? Why do I even need corrective lenses? Shouldn’t this be fixed by my regeneration?” Well whatever the reason, it’s still there. Sighing again, she hacked more vines until there was a pile of dead vines on her floor. Groaning, she threw the pile out the window. Without the vines, the damage in the room was clearer. Shelves were broken, soil was spilled everywhere. Her eyeball collection was ruined too. Jars were broken, formaldehyde leaking, eyeballs squashed by vines or decaying. It’s a miracle how it hasn’t smelled yet. She’ll fix that later.
She found her barely used mobile phone under a tile.
Wiping her phone, she dialed someone under the name ‘Usagi-chan’
Ring….ring….click!
“Hallo hallo! Information broker Seiko-chan!” A high-pitched voice said from the other line.
“Hey. It’s me Chamuel.”
“Oooh, long time no see Head hole!”
Bone sighed internally and rubbed her temple. Seiko sounded so squeaky it hurt her ears. “I need a new monocle lense.”
“That time of the year again huh? Well, I don’t mind. As long as you give the payment.”
Bone frowned. “Can’t I give you money instead?”
“Nope! I already get that from my regular human customers. Besides, I totally want to know what happened! Eventide’s all over the news. ‘Killer forest strikes back. Mother Nature’s Revenge?!’ is my favorite headline.”
She grimaced and sat on the floor. Her bed was ruined at the moment. “....That fast huh?”
“Yep! So tell me more about Tapi and the other cultists! I even found a nice spellbook you can have and information about the portal, and all I want is some juicy Candle Cult gossip.”
Unfortunately, the payment in exchange for Seiko’s services is information about the cult.
Now Bone never exchanged critical information, just things most cultists know. Like how Tapi’s the boss, she and her clique are super scary, cultists she knows, and the events that happen. She’s never revealed any weaknesses, as far as she can remember at least. That isn’t very reassuring.
"You know, this whole thing happened because of traitors. What if I get branded a traitor for giving you info?"
"Psh, it's not like you're telling me their weaknesses or anything. And no one has asked me for info about the cult anyway. Aaaaand, I have a cool new gift for you!"
She sighed. “Fine. I’ll be there tomorrow.”
“Eagerly awaiting your information!”
Click! Beep….beep
Bone frowned, and with a troubled mind she hacked away at the overgrowth.

5 hours later, Bone’s room was finally clean. The dust and rubble was swept out, the broken shelves and wall chunks thrown out, all eyeballs in a bag waiting to be incinerated. Yes, all eyeballs. She had no more jars to store eyeballs and formaldehyde in, and by the time she gets some their beauty will be ruined by bacteria. Her room was fairly ok now, there were still lots of broken tiles and the smell of formaldehyde and her bed is broken but hey what can you do. Tired and sweaty, she decided to cool off in the forest.
She just stayed at the edge of the forest, not wanting to go deeper. She didn’t do much, just leaned back against a tree and relax. She felt her eye drooping, sleep washing over her, only the quiet rustling of leaves and the chirping of crickets heard.
“Chamuel!”
What? Wasn’t that Bone’s old name? Why would anyone in the cult call her Chamuel? Was she dreaming?
“Wow I barely recognized you! You got quite the make-over. It’s a shame your fluffy hair is gone, but the whole flame hair is nice too. What’s with that hat? Can you see? Is that eye on your hat an actual eye or blah blah…..”
Bone groaned. This wasn’t a voice she recognized. Opening her eye, she found a man with orange ram horns crouching down in front of her. He had a weird loop hairstyle and amber eyes. Who the fuck was this dude. He needs to shut up for a bit.
“Who the fuck are you, shut up.” She snapped. That response silenced the guy for a few moments, then stared at her quizzically.
“You...you don’t know who I am?”
Bone shrugged, “Am I supposed to?”
More silence, this dude started looking concerned. “Say..where’s that portal of yours again?”
Bone narrowed her eye, “Why do you know about my portal, heck why do you know me? “
“Because I’m the one who gave it to you. It’s me, Sorbeo.”
Even more silence. Bone had a look of disbelief on her face, while Sorbeo stared at her firmly.
“...You’re joking. You’re pulling my leg.”
“You were bloodied and on the run from the police as a murderer. You were mad and scared and I took advantage of that…...I’m sorry.”
Bone had no idea how to react. Her memories of when she got the portal were fuzzy so she couldn’t confirm if he was telling the truth. But she did remember….
“It’s not you.”
“What?”
“Your face looks way too kind for it to be you. Besides, if it was you why come back?” She said, standing up and walk away.
“Are you looking for this face?”
Bone turned and her blood ran cold. Sorbeo had a much more sinister aura and his face had that same grin she saw when she fought Dante. It was him alright. When he saw Bone’s reaction, he waved his hand and everything went back to normal. He looked like a regular kind old man now, except he had horns. He stepped closer. “Now do you believe-”
Bone ripped off her hat and immediately Dilim’s tentacles lunged at him but didn’t pierce yet.
“Why are you here?! How could you do that to me?!”
“I-I just wanted to see if you were ok! I did feel guilty after giving it to you. And the portal kind of messed with my emotions.”
“What do you mean?!”
“The portal is also a concrete metaphor for the void. When it consumes your heart, your emotions don’t work the same way as before. Some emotions will go away, for instance, what went away is my compassion for others and capability to love. Interpersonal related things.”
Bone softened her glare, was she to believe what he’s saying? It does explain why she has memory problems. She withdrew Dilim’s tentacles slightly. “.....Fine. So you’re here now. Did you just come here to say sorry?”
He shook his head. “No actually.” He extended a hand out to Bonebon. “I came here to take that away from you.”
Bone’s mouth was agape, at this point she was too surprised at his offer to care if he was dangerous or not. She withdrew Dilim’s tentacles. “You...you can do that?”
He gave a sigh of relief now that the threat was taken away. “I can. And don’t worry about me, I can just pass it to someone horrible.” He gave a reassuring smile.
She was speechless. To be honest she never really thought about removing her portal, it seemed impossible too. Going from what he said, her memory might return if the portal’s gone but… “I...It’s ok. I can manage. Thanks for the offer though.” Her face showed otherwise.
Sorbeo looked puzzled. He expected her to jump at it right away, he would. “Are you sure? You would be able to remember your past if you did. And you won’t have short term memory when a month or more passes.”
Short term memory? Bone didn’t know about that. If she had it that meant that she’d forget everything that happened throughout the day the next day right? And memories of her past… “Mmmmm….see I..I won’t have..” She sucked in a deep breath. “I don’t want to be weak! The only selling point I have is this!”
“Oh don’t worry about that. I’ll give you the ability to produce smoke illusions in exchange for it.”
“What.” Smoke illusions for a portal? Plus she’d be able to retain more information on magic and remember her old information about magic and other skills. Sign her the fuck up. She took another deep breath. “Ok.” She shook his hand. “You have a deal.” Sorbeo smiled. He wrote something on a piece of paper and gave her a smoking pipe.
“This is my summoning circle, offer some candy on it and blood if you need me. And this allows you to create those illusions, just visualize what you want and blow.”
“Wait aren’t you going to stick around? Y’know, aftercare or something.”
He shook his head. “Sorry, but I want that thing gone from me soon.”
“A warning, this is going to hurt.” He placed his hands at the side of her head and immediately she felt like it was being ripped apart. She shrieked and clawed at her head, the portal buzzed as if screaming with her. Sorbeo slowly removed his hands from her head, the pain increasing as the portal followed them. She slowly opened her eye, the pain had subsided to a dull throb and she noticed that she was propped up on a tree. The same tree that she was resting on a while ago.
“Was that a wild dream?” She asked herself, reaching up to where her portal was.
Only to find it not there.
“?!?!?!?!?” She rushed into the manor searching for a reflective surface. She didn’t find a mirror, but one part of the floor seemed shiny enough. She saw that her head wasn’t halved anymore. There was a line showing where the portal was, blackened skin and bone around it. Bone. Huh, so there wasn’t skin covering the rest of her skull. “Wow… I should...let this sink in.”

Bone decided to take another nap, wanting to sleep away the stress and headaches of the day away. She lied on her bed, the bedstand broken so it was really flat. She didn’t mind right now.
When her alarm beeped, she felt a migraine start up.
“Urghghhh....I don’t want to go to Seiko’s….But I gottaa…” With a huff she pushed herself off the bed, readying her shawl to be used later for disguise. Slowly, she headed towards the catacombs.
“Is it just me or do these catacombs seem….darker and more depressing?”
Bone muttered to no one in particular while trekking through the underground. She heard that the traitors were trapped here and filled with nightmares. The thought of Problem’s nightmares made her shudder. “....I should get out of her already.” Deciding to hum a song to calm her nerves, she continued deeper.
Eventually, she reached the exit which led to Seiko’s town. Climbing out of an old parking lot, she wrapped her shawl around her head, put on her glasses and went into town. She frowned and glared at passerbys who stared at her strangely, especially since she was going to Seiko’s house.
Seiko’s job as information broker isn’t a secret. No one tries to fight her because she’s beat every assasin hired to do so. Because of these reasons, anyone who associated with Seiko was considered shady or powerful.
Her house was a small apartment with white and light pink stripes on it, and the door was covered in bunny stickers. Bone knocked on the door. “Seiko! It’s me Chamuel!” The door opened and Seiko was there, a manic grin and labcoat on.
“It’s about time! Come come!”
The inside of the house had Japanese elements. Tatami mats, cushions, the occasional potted bamboo. The other room was her lab, where she tries out the drugs and weapons she makes. Bone removed her shawl. When Seiko saw that her portal’s gone, she went wide-eyed. “Your portal! It’s! Gone!”
“Yeah..The skin’s -” She was cut off when the rabbit grabbed her face and inspected her head. “wHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”
“Hm...blackened skin..no hair roots...thin cranium..ok!” She let go of her face. Looking proud of herself, she ushered Bone into her lab.
“What was that all about?”
Seiko was rummaging one of her drawers, ignoring Bone’s question. “I finally have a solution for your faulty eyes.”
“I think you mean eye.”
“Nope!” She produced a small laser gun in one hand and a robot eye in the other. “This,” she held up the gun “is a special gun that will permanently fix your eyesight! It’s like laser eye surgery. This other one,” She held up the eye. “Is a bionic eye. I can attach it to your optical chords. And,” she pointed to Bone’s decaying skull. “I can fix that too.”
“As much as I appreciate you fixing for me, are you even a surgeon? Are you qualified to do surgery?” Bone did not want to risk health problems or something accidentally cut just for perfect eyes or hair. It’s not worth it. Seiko just chuckled.
“I used to be a surgeon back on the moon. I’m perfectly qualified.”
Bone wasn’t buying it. “Human anatomy is different from moon rabbit anatomy you know.”
“They’re not that different. Besides!” She leaned in very close to Bone’s face. “It’s free.”
Silence.
“Are you sure it’s free.”
“Yup! Just tell me the usual candle gossip.” Seiko patted the surgical table in the room. Bone frowned and hesitantly lied down on it. “You’ll be fine.” She held up a needle filled with something.
“What is that.”
“Anesthesia. Now go to sleep.” Seiko injected the needle, then Bone slept.
When she woke up, her head didn’t hurt or smell like decay anymore. In fact, it smelled like alcohol and medicine. She also noticed that her range of eyesight was wider. Blinking, she found out she had another eye. One that can move and see. .
“Here.” Seiko handed her a mirror. Bone saw that her decaying skull had been covered by synthetic skin. She even had blue hair in a short bob cut. She also didn’t need a monocle to see. The bionic eye looked like a normal eye, even in the same hue as hers. “The hair’s fire proof.Ya like?”
Bone was speechless. Her blue fire streaked her also blue hair and added flair to it. Her bionic eye could zoom in and zoom out and it even had nightvision. “Oh my god…” She was starting to tear up a little.
“Hey, you still owe me info!”
Bone grinned and pulled the other in a tight hug. The rest of the day was spent talking about the cult and the features of Bone’s new eye.
Unfortunately, one feature left out by Seiko is that said eye is also accessible by Seiko. What Bone sees, she sees.
