From Smoke To Smother
There was a distant rumble of thunder.
It had been so very faint, that one could just as well have imagined it, weren't it for the fact that after a moment's pause, it picked up again. Another growl made itself known, and the noise was slowly starting to get more distinct, louder and louder with each passing repetition.
Suddenly it got dark within the great halls of the church; black clouds were towering high outside, swallowing the sparse light that rascal moon could provide in such a formerly-peaceful night. A peace now devoured by the pitter-patter of water against glass, the creaking of trees swaying in the howling storm, and an ear-shattering ROAR of thunder which all but split the sky in half. Over such noise and rumpus, lesser ears might just have missed the creak of the oak doors parting, the patting of wet hooves on cold marble, or the slight heaving of strained lungs. Although certainly no one would have missed how the wind found its way into the church, how the thunder suddenly seemed twice as loud, nor the echoing thump of the doors closing again. There was no mistaking that some unfortunate soul must have been in desperate search for cover from nature's wrath.
But alas, this cover did not appear all too welcoming; pitch-black darkness inside the building, only the brief flashes of lightning there to reveal rows of benches, rough stone walls, a ceiling dizzying-high ― And the silhouette of a tall figure at the far end of the hall.
The ominous blue flame high upon its head illuminating nothing but a crown of twisted horns.

The night had been clear as the Satyr had gone outside for her usual rounds. Carrying her iron ax on her back she had lowered her hood to let her unruly curls breath for a bit. In her own cabin in the woods she would take the hood off, but there was always something pleasant to feel the moonlight on your skin and have the smooth wind touch your hair and face. A serene smile was on her lips as the ice cold creature roamed through the woods, leaving a trail of frozen tracks.
A crack of thunder broke her from her calm and her head snapped up, her eyes growing wide as she sees dark clouds cover up the moon. Making her environment pitch black, safe from the soft blue glow of the flames of her horns. Green eyes shot around in a panic and with a swift movement she moved up her hood, to shield herself from the soon to be bad weather. How could this happen, she had made sure to check the signs, though freak storms weren't uncommon, she just hoped it would stop soon. How wrong she was.
Panting hard her legs carried her through the piercing rain and she cursed as she could feel the thick droplets freeze on her skin and her horns. There had to be a place to find shelter, a flash of lightning lit up her path and the silhouette of a church stuck out between the thick trees and her heart fluttered with hope. Sure she wasn't fond of human religion, especially since they didn't seem fond of her kind. Running to the building she slipped and bashed against the wood and cursed. “Argh, damn..” she rubbed her shoulder and she pulled the door and with a creak it opened. She squeaked when another crack of thunder made the building shake on its place and the frozen faun slipped inside and pulled the door closed, panting heavily, leaning against the wood, catching her breath, which came out in cold puffs of air.
Slowly catching her breath she turned around only to stiffen on the spot at the figure at the end of the large hall. Her eyes focusing on the flame hanging between a pair of horns and she knew that this man was associated with her Cult, but she knew enough to not immediately trust him, the burning of her right arm had taught her well, not to ask too many questions, not all member were friendly and helpful. Warily she gazed at the stranger. “Hello.. I am sorry for bursting in..” she said, he left hand reaching to the back, ready to pull out her ax.

The demon had been busy cleaning up the altar when he had been interrupted, and there was but an intricately bound ribcage and bloodied linen left by now, safe for a small accumulation of minor bones and gory strings. He had meant to take them outside to bury or burn, respectively, together with the rest of the week's sacrifices. ―But chance hadn't been nice upon his duties, and he would have to postpone this for a while. At least until the rain stopped, that is.
And so it was that he eventually turned around to face the visitor, the distance between them crossed with confident strides. There were candles all over the room, dozens and dozens of them, and each candle he passed lit up in a bright blue flame. He caused a trail of cold light following his steps, one-by-one-by-one... It didn't take long for the whole hall to be illuminated in an eery blue tint, casting flickering shadows to dance over the floor and up the walls, all the way to the dim safety of the ceiling. "What brings such a young thing out into the woods in such a stormy night?" He greeted the Satyr in the end, halfway down the hall, his voice proving to be delightfully deep ― an undeniable trace of something foreign to it, unrecognisable in the way the room caused it to resound.
The priest's grin was adorned with oversized fangs as he came to a halt a little distance away. "Apologies, but I will have to ask of you to remove your weaponry ― This is sacred ground, my child." There was no leaving room for debate in the way he held out a clawed hand, in expectation of having the axe handed over. There was still blood clinging to his fingers, and a stray piece of meat caught on a talon.

Ty’s hand managed to get a solid grip on her axe and she took it out, holding it beside her in a defensive manner as the ‘priest’ made his way towards her, lighting a way of blue light. Even from a distance Ty could feel the warmth of the candles and she frowned slightly. Hopefully it wouldn’t be too hot around here, that would be bad, especially when one is in the middle of the woods in a strange church she has never seen before. Where was she even? How far was she from her home?
Her attention snapped back to the man in front of her and now with all the lights on she could finally see the other’s features. Twisted horns sprouted from brown hairs, a dark reddish skin, which looked off in the strange blue lights of the candles that were lit. When the voice spoke again, it radiated a smooth and friendly vibe, but underneath Ty could hear cruel intent and she stiffened and took a step back. Cold wet fabric pressed against her other soaked shirt, causing a shuddered run through her being. The Satyr’s hand clutched around the wood of her axe and the flames around her horns flared up a bit. The voice echoed through the room and it brought a shiver down Ty’s spine. “My apologies Father. I was out, looking for possible traps and poachers when the storm started” she explained, her eyes went up, meeting with yellow. “I didn’t mean to burst in, I am simply looking for shelter” she said slowly and she hardened her gaze and took a step closer as she noticed the other kept his distance.
“My weaponry? You mean my axe?” Tyronica managed out and she narrowed her eyes. “I am sorry father, but I am afraid I can’t.. I promise I will do no harm on your sacred grounds” Ty replied smoothly and stored the axe away on her back, pulling a face as she felt the wet cloak press against her and she slowly lowered her hood, feeling herself grow a bit uncomfortable to have everything in view. But the cloak had to dry, else she could run up a cold and she couldn’t afford to be sick, not with the hunters out, and her research on the cult going in quite the right direction. “if I may, Can I dry my cloak here as I wait out the storm?” she politely asked, her green eyes meeting with the yellow ones. It felt odd looking up at someone who was that tall, it really pointed out how short Tyronica was for her kind.

"Ah, of course you can stay, of course. Anyone is welcome ― as long as they pay the due respect that is." The priest spoke, a vague gesture made with one hand. He hardly wanted to send her out into the storm again, especially without having a reason to do so. It were her words which caused an amused smile to hush over his features; 'traps and poachers', a true do-good it seemed? Peculiar, considering how to all appearances she seemed to belong to the cult, which wasn't exactly known for being conventionally virtuous. In their own way, perhaps, but not in such a traditional way.
Honestly, at this point he would have just dropped the topic and left things as they were, would have given her a blanket and been on his merry way ― hadn't the Satyr decided to argue about the possession of her weapon ― not like he wanted to steal and keep it, all he asked of her was to not carry it on her person! "Excuse me?" The demon echoed, quite offended, "You just crudely threatened an ordained with an axe, I will not have someone walk through halls of prayer with a weapon at hand ! This was not a request." There was a certain cold edge to his voice now, not angry per se, but rather bordering on thinly-veiled impatience. And even more so, he closed his eyes for a brief moment and took a deep breath, in order to calm his spirits before the thread dared to completely snap. It seemed to have helped.
"You can ... leave the axe and your cloak by the vestry." He advised, calmer now, forcefully collected in the way he gestured towards a modest wooden door. It led towards a small conference-like room, humble if anything. "There is a chest with some dry clothes and blankets, too, if you like." They would probably be too big, but still better than drenched ones he figured, and certainly a lot better than dripping all over the floor.

Tyronica slowly nodded and undid the silver claps that held her cloak around her shoulders and with a soft squish the soaked fabric landed on the mason floor and she swiftly picked it up, the strapped axe on her back in full view now. "Thank you.." She softly said, her voice a bit softer as she felt a bit self conscious of her looks. Her brown curls were stuck to her pale skin and her horns were still adorned with icicles from the rain that has frozen on them. She wore he usual blue flannel but even that shirt hadn't been safe from the rain. She shivered lightly, not from the cold, more of the feeling of wet fabric touching her skin.
Her eyes snapped up when the voice of the reverend boomed out and she narrowed the green orbs. "I apologize if I offended you, Father. But someone like me can never be too safe. I know you are from the cult as well, but.. I have my own reasons to mistrust members.." she said and her hand subconsciously traces the burn scars on her arm. They were freshly healed and the fact her skin was stone cold, hadn't helped the healing process at all! She continued to stare up defiantly, she wasn't going to hand her axe to a stranger, especially someone who had a vibe around him like that. Her posture relaxed a bit when he offered a different spot to store the cloak and weapon and she slowly nodded. "I can do that, yes.." she said and she took the axe off, the wood creaking as it froze up with her hold.
Holding her wet cloak over one arm and the axe in her hand she headed towards the small room and nodded at the reverend. "Thank you, Father." the satyr said, still holding her respect. She went inside the room and looked around and saw a good spot for her axe and she laid it there. Ty really didn't want to leave it here, but it wasn't as if she was useless without it. Having the cold magic had its perks from time to time. Leaving the axe for now, she looked around the small room. It mainly had chests and cabinets. But there were some tapestries on the wall and her eyes traveled over the battlefields they displayed and she snorted lightly. Instead she went for the chest and looked through it. It mainly seemed there were priest robes in there and she spotted a blanket and took it out and wrapped it around her shoulders. It would dry her at least, but she couldn't become warm anyway. Leaving the robes behind she stepped out of the room again, green eyes taking a better look around the hall now that there wasn't a large ..man in front of her.
Talking about the reverend, the faun didn't see him anywhere and carefully she stepped through the church hall, the shuffling of her hooves echoing through the hall. The church itself didn't seem too big from the outside, but she wasn't sure if it was all that it seemed. Her eyes roaming around and she moved some of the wet curls out of her face to get a better look of the windows and candles. Suddenly a flash of lightning lite up the place and Ty yelped and stumbled back and landed in one of the benches. "For god sa--" she cut herself off before she would curse in a church.

She was right about that much, the church really doesn't appear all too big from the outside ― seemingly not much bigger than a small chapel, run-down and giving off a vibe of abandonment with its grimy stonework and vines creeping up the sides. Still, that is whole a different story from the other point of the doors, for despite it seems ancient inside and out, it's on quite different terms of maintenance: walls imposingly high as soon as you step inside, towering above one with a sense of judgment, polished floor reflecting both the blue light of the countless candles, as wells as the yellow-red usually cast by great windows. There is an underlying scent of iron scrubbed deep into every gap and niche, carrying a taste on the back of one's tongue much like a jar of old nickel change kept in sunlight. It gets worse in the summer days.
The Reverend had been back for just long enough to witness her near slip-up. There hadn't been much or any of a warning as he suddenly leant on the backrest a bit to her side, arms simply crossed over the wooden rail to support himself. "Language." He reminded the other calmly, despite her having bitten down the rest of the sentence, clearly an amused tone to his voice ― He was definitely more at ease now that there was no axe in the equation. "Afraid of a little thunder?" Three steps and he was around the bench to sit down next to her [with some distance], although not without a solemn nod and halfway-mumbled words of 'in tui venia' towards the sanctuary. It was a habit he was barely aware of anymore, having become second nature to him like many an other quirk. Rituals, he would insist.
There were a couple moments of silence, and the demon seemed rather lost in thought for the time being. Eventually he snapped himself out of it with a frown and a click of tongue-against-teeth, having remembered that he very well had company. “Say, what’s your name?” He asked in the end, “Do you have a family worrying about you; need to make a call?” Unusually nice for Rev’s standards, yes ― But honestly, he had no interest in pissing someone off he will potentially have to spend a couple hours with, or Heaven forbid even longer. Who knows when the storm will end?

Ty was grumbling to herself as she rubbed her back. The wood of the bench hadn’t been too forgiving on her backside. Underneath the blanket she stroked the spot of which knew what was going to be a bruise. “Language” she heard behind her and Ty let out a squeak, accidentally bashing her in fur covered knee against the bench in front of her and she groaned clutching it, her gloved hand holding the painful spot. The Satyr bit her tongue to keep herself from cursing again. “I-It just startled me..” she said with a huff and slowly Ty let go of the sore leg. As to emphasize the point another snap of thunder broke down outside and Ty jumped again and she averted her face from the window and closed her eyes. God she really didn’t like this storm, and the feeling that she was in quite some trouble kept growing, especially as when the reverend was around her.
When Ty opened her eyes the reverend was sitting right beside her on the bench and she quickly shuffled to the side. But she made sure to keep her body directed towards the reverend. The feeling of the side of the bench pressed in Ty’s lower back and the Satyr stopped her movements. How did he even get this close, so fast?! Tyronica’s green eyes went to the altar in front of them and then went back to the reverend and she raised a brow, what had the other just said, she had heard hushed words. Her Latin isn’t what it used to be, normally she would have been able to understand, but her mind was scattered, the thunder didn’t help with that.
The silence seemed heavy in the air in that moment Ty took her time to simply look around again, when sitting down everything seemed so big. She hadn’t been in a church for probably 20 years, the last time being an abandoned one where she stayed for a while. But this was different, even though the building seemed old and run down, the inside seemed to still hold the splendour many churches held. Looking at the blue flames Ty could still feel the warmth radiating from them, and same went for the ‘man’ beside her. She heard a voice and she blinked, oh he had said something? She felt her cheeks colour and pointed her attention at her company. “I am sorry, what?” she said and cocked her head a bit to the side, the curls lightly bouncing as she did so. “Oh! My name is Tyronica, but just call me Ty” she answered quickly. Her face then grew a bit grim, “No, There is no family that is concerned with me” the satyr muttered with a bit of a bitter tone. Ty had made no movement to shake hands, a habit she would normally do, but after an encounter with a rather irritating pseudo-demon she was a lot more careful with her handshakes.

“Careful, careful!” There was a slight ring of laughter to his voice as the satyr hit her knee, not exactly having meant to startle her like that. He wasn’t exactly being gleeful about it, but a tad of amusement never hurt anyone, did it?
Although at Ty’s words the Reverend turned his head slightly to glance at her, patient as she admitted to not having paid attention. “Your name, perhaps,” He repeated his question, “and I asked whether you need to call your family, or someone else?” When she spoke again he hesitated for a moment, and would have offered a name in return, as courtesy would suggest; but that was information he preferred to keep. Either way he didn’t carry that name anymore, has not for a long time now; and after all, a demon’s birthname is power in the hands of those knowledgeable in the arts. Paranoid and far-fetched, sure, but you don’t survive as long if you just throw about means to an end like that.
“My consolations, Tyronica.” The Reverend spoke in the end, deliberately not having picked up on her nickname offer. He thought it ... inappropriate, in a way ― Relying too much on terms of closeness which very well were not there. But even a blind man would have noticed her sudden bitterness, and so he didn't press further, aware he seemed to have hit a touchy subject there. Instead he changed the subject, picking up on a thought which had been bothering him since she had stumbled in here: “I see you are part of this whole cult mess, and I ― ah well, I haven’t been around for too long, you see, the community is big...” And the priest trailed off for a moment there, the rest of the sentence a muttered jumble including the words ‘sheep’ and ‘forsaken’ perhaps. He had to clear his throat. “Anyhow, truth be spoken, you seem a tad too sweet to belong to a gathering of ― monsters. Mainly.” And at the word monsters he bared his fangs, not in a threatening way for once, but rather as if to underline his point. "What gives?"

Ty couldn't help but huff at the other's amusement but she couldn't blame the guy, it was rather amusing to see someone startle like that. If it were he other way around, she would've also let out a giggle. She let her eyes roam over the strange priest, she didn't like to admit it, but he was rather handsome, strong cheekbones and jawline. Though of course the red coloured skin and horns made some alarm bells ring in her head. It seemed rather ironic to have a demon priest who lives in an abandoned church in the middle of woods. Ever since her little encounter with the psuedo-demon made the Satyr do some research on the subject of demons. Nothing really seemed to match Grim. But the reverend in front of her seemed to fit the image of a demon quite well. Though this was only more reason for her to be cautious around the reverend.
A pout placed itself on her lips as the other didn't use her nickname. It always felt strange to hear her regular name. It felt so unpersonal, but maybe in this situation it was a good thing. She wasn't sure who to trust in the cult, but if this demon was anything like the previous one she met, then she was in for one hell of a headache. Though from what she had noticed he seemed a lot more relaxed and not as chaotic as the other.
"Hm? Oh the cult?" she mused and then let out a bit of chuckle. "yeah, I am a member alright, I wouldn't expect a man of God to be part of a cult like this. Though.. You seem to have made different deals in life" she hummed and an amused smirk placed itself on her lips. "Have you taken up the task to convert us, Father?" she asked with an innocent tone.
The smirk on her lips fell at the mention of the word monster and her green gaze turned colder. As her gaze turned colder the temperature dropped as well, the flames around her horns spiked up a notch and she released a breath, creating a small cloud of cold air and her eyes met with the yellow one of the reverend. "I rather dislike that word" she started and her eye contact remained prominent. "I try to approach others with a nicer attitude. Experience has proven me that is better approach than attacking and asking question afterwards." she hissed and then looked away and she ran a hand over her face and took a breath to calm herself.
The feeling of anger bubbled in her chest. It had been a long time since she got called a monster and hearing that name brought back some memories she rather kept away from her mind. She took a deep breath again and her heart finally calmed. Ty continued to look forward towards the alter at the front of church and her gaze was a bit distant. "I had my reasons to join this cult, but strangely I do not recall the exact moment I joined" she said and her angry expression turned into a more frustrated one. "This cult has so many secrets and I want to find out what their goal is, but how do I even do that if I can't even remember the moment I joined" she groaned out. She was now more talking to herself than the demon beside her. "What about you, Father? How did you end up in your... situation?" she said and also motioned her hand to the abandoned church around them.

“ ―Do you require conversion, my child?” There was just a hint of danger to his words as he spoke, just barely of a trace he had allowed to slip through. It was needless to say that the Reverend had noticed that cheeky tone in Ty's voice, and he had meant to respond in much alike of a manner, but with him such did have a habit of coming off as more threatening than anything, [ Although, could you believe, there was actually a twitch of an honest smile to go along! ] “Is there something you wish to get off your chest?”
Truth be spoken, Rev hadn't expected such a violent reaction from the satyr, not to mention that this was very well an interesting return. He couldn’t help but lean away at her outburst of temper, low-key impressed by this display. “I understand your anger.” The demon spoke in the end, careful, shifting in his seat; yellow eyes cast downwards. Avoiding her's. “Although that’s exactly what we are ― just look at us, misfits of sharp teeth and deformed bodies, petty dabblers not belonging here nor there. Creatures, monsters, humans with — unfortunate affinities; outcasts. But that doesn’t mean we are lost, nor forsaken.” A slight pause, maybe for effect, or just to sort his words, “The ― The Lord has a different kind of plan for us, and if our steps lead us to bear the yoke of oxen to a power-hungry woman ― so there be a reason to it.”
He could surely understand Ty's cause, it seemed sincere and reasonable enough, for after all curiosity did kill the cat. He merely wondered whether satisfaction would be enough to bring it back this time around? “It’s not big of a story in my case," Rev admitted in turn, knowing that matters rarely were complicated in his case, "I heard hushed words and confessions, felt like I lost my lambs to these people. Naturally I went to investigate, and before I knew any better, it was too late to turn around. But ... life goes crooked ways, you see, and even a place like this needs condolence of the divine sorts. You will be lead to your path in the end too, we all will.” There wasn't any more to it, at least nothing he remembered or wished to share: lost frames of bright light, blanks, his own reflection in a pair of glasses; a dreadful sense of holy holy clinging to the blasphemous prayers he had uttered without remembering what for. Or to whom. Following hot on the heels a burning sense of loss, searing through his veins in what the demon would be sure to call a silhouette of hell's brimstone. He could still feel it, ever since, a faint buzzing sensation deep down in his core; white noise trudging along with the hollow knowledge of something being greatly amiss — There were times when he was glad he didn't remember the rest of it.
"I've made some unfortunate choices in my life, but I do not regret where to it got me."

Ty shifted slightly and a small smile formed on her lips. "I never had much interest in religion, father" she said lightly. "It has always been a strange concept to me, as my kind is one the spirits some people preach about" Running a hand through her curls, which were slowly drying, green eyes became more visible, though the glow had dimmed considerably. "But I suppose everybody could find themselves in a believe" Green eyes looked at the reverend of a moment and then looked around again.
The anger in her heart had subdued and she now simply felt sorrow pull on her heart. "Reverend there is plenty that needs to be spoken of by me. I wonder if there will be a day that I will be able to share the things that haunt me" she began. The soft glow of her flames made her pale skin look more blue and with the blue flames around her in the church hall it was obvious she didn't carry the regular tanned skin and rosy cheeks a faun would wear. She wasn't like any other creature, surely there were satyrs and fauns. But she was a combination of two and with a complete opposite purpose in life. Ty had grown silent for a moment, lost in thoughts of her past and the missing patches. She often wondered what had happened to her old friends, but in the decades she roamed in these woods had left their marks on her but also on the woods, as Ty did bring winter with her.
She used to bring life into this world, her kind would make nature bloom and call in spring. Now she brought cold and death with her, trees discolour and animals hide away, even after she helped the fauna of the woods stay safe. It was a rather thankless job, but she did it anyway. The satyr mainly worked to keep humans away from the woods though, she only accepted some humans in her life, but they were rare.
"Surely we aren't forsaken, but I wonder if I am being tested by a so called God" she mused out loud and let out a strained sigh. "I surely hope our dear leader will not ruin your Lord's plans" the faun said with a chuckle and then looked around, listening to the reverend's voice. His voice seemed to carry something soothing to it, it was strange, but maybe that was simply something a priest needed. A strong voice that could carry the stories of his Lord, but also a gentle tone that can make someone feel comfortable enough to confess their sins and worries. At that thought Tyronica couldn't help but snort. A demon priest. She couldn't help but wonder how many sins this man had on his name.
"Don't we all, father? it seems even us ... monsters" the satyr pauzed as she pulled a face at the word but took a breath and continued.".. make poor choices. I wonder if there would be a God forgiving enough to even forgive the sinners, creatures like me or even... demons" The last word rung in the room. It felt as if the room had suddenly started to whisper softly, hushed voices, prayers spoken in private. Ty's ears twitch as a breeze seemed to run through the church and she blinked and looked at the reverend after a long time of no eye contact. It was hard to read the man, though Ty had gotten used to unreadable faces, after all her previous encounter with a cult member left her with even less to work with. A skull had little expression to show after all. But that didn't make the situation less frustrating. The small satyr wasn't sure if she had offended the (un)holy man, or if he was simply staring at her, but the calculating yellow eyes were a bit off putting."father?" she started slowly, swallowing the lump in her throat. Tyronica couldn't help but feel vulnerable without her axe with her.

The Reverend actually paused at Ty's words, about how religion is not something that is native to her, and he knit his brows together in thought. Whole a different sentence had already formed at the tips of his tongue, and he nearly blurted out something quite rude before deciding against it: "―Does your kind view themselves as sacred? — Do you?" He inquired, and there was decidedly no offense to it, no accuse, a mere query in an attempt at understanding what she was trying to convey. Truth be told, he was starting to grow fond of the company, for the satyr seemed pleasant enough to be around. He wouldn't want to put her off by being his usual grouchy self, now would he? Not to mention that there was a genuine tad of interest to it.
Although what followed was a peculiar notion, what a bizarre thought, as if anyone could actually as much as influence the grand scheme; let alone ruin it! [ Not even the crazed leader of such misfit souls. ] "She won't." The priest assured Ty in the end, a steadfast claim without doubt, accompanied even by a self-sure scoff. "She can't. No one is above the Lord's will." Nor is it within their right to doubt, if one were to ask the Reverend, for in the end they will all end up just where they are supposed to be anyhow. The path itself is variable, flowing, a collection of crossroads and deceptions leading to a set destination over one way or the other. A complicated concept he tended to change his mind about a lot, in a futile attempt at both justification and comprehension. "I don't blame you for your doubt, and everyone should have a chance at forgiveness — but such isn't given out lightly." He eventually added, "One has to beg on their knees, and mean it, for devotion is the way to redemption." Saviors and saints, devils and heathens alike, long as they set their mind to it; thus making second chances a privilege and not a right. In a way it was the story of his being, for the demon has spent his whole second life trying to outwit what ended his first, just to end up as what he feared most. Not that he knew that, no, but that's whole a different story for some other time to tell.
Rev hadn't meant to glare, simply furrowed in thought, and at her mention he snapped out of it — The demon kept forgetting that these days, without the glamour spell, his appearance grew to be quite unsettling to some. Or at least that's what he assumed had made Ty uncomfortable.
